CHAPTER EIGHT

Imparting Their Knowledge

The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple among his followers gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and lovingness. If he is indeed wise, he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind …

Kahlil Gibran

The Prophet

“Are you kidding me? That’s how you erased your personal history? You divorced your family?” Paul was back at my house, a week later, explaining one of Grandfather’s main teachings. Erasing personal history was a concept he briefly mentioned the week before.

“Yes. I guess you could call it that. I took a leap of faith,” he answered. “I trusted Grandfather, who believed it was necessary to do so. He taught the importance of freeing ourselves from the restrictive boxes that families, friends, cultures, and societies placed us in. We’re all manipulated and indoctrinated—told how we should live our lives, and what we should believe. But once we’re free from those boxes, we can discover who we really are, and what we’re supposed to do while on this planet. Our world, which we take to be truth, is actually a created reality, programmed into us from birth—even by our well-meaning families.”

“Well, that may be true, but that’s how we’re used to living. Created or not, it’s all we know,” I said.

“Exactly, which is why we need to observe, listen, and question everything. After studying with Grandfather for two years, I realized that to fully embrace the truth, I needed to immerse myself in it fulltime. Of course, that would require making major changes to my life, and to my wife’s, as well. But Karyn was onboard and excited by the idea, so I decided to make it happen.”

“What kind of changes?”

“First, I freed myself from the burden of my many responsibilities. I gave up my involvement in the Animas Valley Free School, and quit my job with the post office. Then I explained to the residents of Starlight that I was selling the house that I had loved for five years, so the community we created would have to be dissolved. It was hard, but they understood why I had to make those changes … how important it was for me.”

“How important what was for you?” I insisted.

“My need to drop out of society. Karyn and I, Grandfather and Lisa, and a few friends were about to embrace a simple and self-reliant life—without public utilities—otherwise known as ‘off the grid.’ We were going to live on the land, dedicating our lives to finding God and glory, and focusing solely on Grandfather’s teachings.”

“Wow, talk about putting your money where your mouth is,” I said. “But what did your parents say about that?”

“Well, my dad and brother, Bruce, lived in Hawaii. I flew out to visit them and tell them goodbye.”

“You flew to Hawaii to break ties with them? For how long, forever? And wasn’t that rather dramatic?”

“I didn’t mean it to be dramatic, just honest,” Paul stressed.
